Eagles and cardinals and fawns, oh my!
Wildlife photos from Deb Knecht's yard
Deb Knecht has been documenting the wildlife drama unfolding in her yard near the Cannon River Wilderness Area: a fawn sneaking past her bird feeders at dawn to snack with a squirrel, a few of the hundreds of birds descending after a blizzard, and an eagle that scattered her usual customers. When she mentioned these recent photos on Facebook, I asked if I could share them here with her narratives. (Click any photo to enlarge.)
Fawn and squirrel, Dec. 30:
So this morning, as I’m watching the birds, turkeys, and squirrels, this fawn comes into the yard. It must be hungry as they don’t come around much during the daylight. She snuck in past the bird feeders and gave me the “eye”, and then went over to the corn cob feeder where the squirrel was having its breakfast. Somehow it doesn’t get much cuter than this! The turkeys were quite active and scared them away. It was fun just to watch the interaction.
Multiple birds, Dec. 29:
After yesterday’s blizzard, the birds today in the yard were absolutely crazy. We had 30 turkeys come through, had 3 pairs of cardinals, a couple dozen blue jays, over 50 Juncos and the house finches, goldfinches, sparrows, and all of the woodpeckers. Hundreds of birds literally. I sit in my porch with a cup of coffee and watch the circus. Life is good.

Eagle, Jan. 9:
I think I found the reason why a lot of my birds have deserted my feeders the last few days. This guy was sitting in a tree about 100 yards out from my bird feeding area.
